Cercarbono has launched a public consultation for Version 2.2 of the Methodology M/WM-SW001 for Landfill Biogas Destruction and Utilization Projects. This methodology, which has undergone a thorough review by an independent expert third party, aims to enhance the generation of high-integrity carbon credits through climate change mitigation projects focused on the destruction or energy utilization of landfill-produced biogas.
Highlights of Version 2.2:
- Scope: Applicable to both new projects and modifications to existing systems for the capture, collection, combustion, or energetic use of landfill-produced biogas.
- Mitigation Activities: Focuses on reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, supported by the destruction of GHG or the generation/supply of renewable energy.
- Renewable Electric Power Generation: Includes activities that displace electricity generation either in interconnected systems/grids or in non-interconnected zones.
- Technical and Regulatory Framework: Establishes the required documents or tools necessary for project implementation using this methodology.
- Eligibility: Projects should not be implemented solely for legal compliance purposes. The methodology applies to projects with or without an operating biogas capture system, providing guidelines for eligible project activities and compliance.
- Baseline Scenario: Defines possible scenarios for biogas management and sources of GHG emissions to be considered.
- Project Scenario: Outlines the sources of GHG emissions that should be considered for the project scenario.
- Calculation of GHG Emission Reductions: Provides detailed, stepwise guidelines for calculating GHG emission reductions.
- Compliance with Complementary Aspects: Highlights and guides compliance with applicable safeguards and the project’s contribution to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
To provide feedback on the proposed updates, please download the methodology and leave your comments in the consultation section on our website and submit it by October 12th. Your feedback will play a crucial role in refining the methodology and ensuring its effectiveness.
Consultation Period:
- Start Date: September 23nd
- End Date: November 11th
