Colombia, July 31st, 2024 — Cercarbono and Global Zero Waste announce the registration of the “Circular PET, Bangladesh” project under the Voluntary Programme on Circular Economy. This marks a significant milestone in promoting sustainability through circular economy practices.
The project, led by Bangladesh Petrochemical Company Limited (BPCL) and developed by Climate Impact, is the first PET recycling plant in Bangladesh, located in Narayanganj. It represents a major advancement in the country’s waste management infrastructure, with the capacity to recycle substantial quantities of PET, reducing plastic pollution and fostering economic growth.
This registration is the first step, followed by validation, verification, and certification to ensure the project’s compliance and effectiveness.
Impact and Significance
The project exemplifies innovative waste management by transforming waste plastics into reusable materials, conserving natural resources, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It also supports local economies and contributes to environmental sustainability in Bangladesh, a country facing severe waste management challenges.
A Milestone for Cercarbono and Global Zero Waste
The “Circular PET, Bangladesh” project is the first registered under the Circular Economy Methodology, setting a precedent for future initiatives. It underscores Cercarbono and Global Zero Waste’s leadership in promoting circular economy projects and their commitment to innovative environmental solutions.
Alex Saer, CEO of Cercarbono, emphasized, “The success of ‘Circular PET, Bangladesh’ sets a promising precedent for future projects and highlights the importance of circular economy principles in sustainable development.”
Sandra Pinzón, CEO of Global Zero Waste, added, “As discussions on a global treaty on plastic pollution advance, this project serves as a crucial financial tool for promoting effective plastic transformation under a circular economy model.
Our goal is to benefit the community by universalizing solutions, connecting sellers and buyers of Plastic Credits worldwide through our EcoRegistry platform, which ensures transparency and traceability of transactions using blockchain technology. This will not only enhance the technical and financial capacities of the waste management sector but also help reduce the social gap in communities that are directly aXected by the environmental impacts of improper plastic management.”
Although greenhouse gases are at the heart of the climate crisis, one of the most important threats to life in our age, plastic pollution is also a problem that should never be ignored. The destruction of natural resources due to the supply of raw materials continues at full speed in the world where there is a complete frenzy of consumption. In order to prevent this destruction as much as possible, especially the recycling of plastics is of great importance.
In this context, I fully support the Cercarbono circular economy-based plastics program, which I believe will provide a serious incentive for plastic recycling processes.
