Colombia, December 18 – Cercarbono is pleased to announce its recognition as a certification program by Chile’s Ministry of the Environment (MMA). This recognition allows projects certified under its standard to participate in the Green Tax Offset System (SCE). The approval enhances Chile’s carbon market offerings by facilitating the certification of projects that not only contribute to carbon neutrality but also generate social, environmental, and economic benefits for the communities most impacted by pollution.
Through Exempt Resolution No. 7,120 of 2024, Chile’s Ministry of the Environment recognized Cercarbono as an external certification program aligned with the requirements established by Law No. 20,780 and Supreme Decree No. 4 of 2023. Specific eligibility conditions for participating projects can be consulted in the official resolution published in the Diario Oficial.
The SCE is an innovative mechanism that allows taxpayers subject to the Green Tax to offset their emissions through certified reduction or removal projects. According to the Ministry, since its implementation, the Green Tax has raised over CLP 900 billion. In its first year of operation, the SCE offset 260,000 tons of CO₂ through renewable energy generation projects, connecting major emitting companies with certified reduction initiatives.
The recognition of Cercarbono as an official standard broadens the range of options available in Chile’s market for project certification, meeting the growing demand for reliable credits. Our expertise in sectors such as Nature-Based Solutions (NBS) and Renewable Energy enables the development of high-impact initiatives that improve air quality and contribute to the country’s sustainable development.
Cercarbono’s Commitment to Latin America and Chile
Since its founding in 2016, Cercarbono has worked to connect emerging markets with high-integrity climate solutions, ensuring that the benefits generated by certified projects remain in the territories that need them most. This local and technical approach has positioned Cercarbono as a strategic partner for both developers and buyers of credits, facilitating their integration into global markets while prioritizing regional needs.
The approval in Chile reaffirms our commitment to the region and strengthens our mission to empower local actors in climate action. Cercarbono will continue working to ensure that its certification guarantees transparency, additionality, and permanence, aligning with Chile’s national goals and its Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).
Building a More Robust and Reliable Market
Cercarbono’s participation in the SCE supports the Ministry of the Environment’s efforts to consolidate this mechanism as a key tool for mobilizing resources toward projects that drive the country’s transition to a low-carbon economy. Initiatives promoted by the Ministry and market actors have been instrumental in facilitating the alignment of projects and strengthening the dynamics between supply and demand for certificates in Chile. These actions aim not only to highlight the relevance of the SCE but also to ensure its success as a driver of sustainable development and climate action.
