In Cercarbono we have developed a new version of the M/LFM-DE_RE: Methodology for Projects for the Destruction and Utilisation of Biogas from Landfill Sites, designed for the implementation of climate change mitigation initiatives through the management of landfill residues for the destruction and utilization of biogas generated from residues.
This methodology was developed to the generation of carbon credits from Climate Change Mitigation Projects (CCMPs) focused on the destruction or energetic use of biogas from landfills to reduce its release into the atmosphere. CCMPs must have been in operation five years ago to the registration of the initiative under the Cercarbono´s Certification Programme.
For CCPMs to be eligible, in addition to meeting the additionality requirements, they must chemically oxidise the methane present in the biogas with or without biogas utilisation (in the latter case displacing the use of a fossil fuel source for energy purposes or electricity produced from fossil fuel sources), provided that it can be demonstrated that in the absence of the CCPM it would be released directly into the atmosphere without any treatment. These may be new projects, existing projects, retrofits, rehabilitations or replacements of landfill energy capture or combustion and utilisation systems.
