Cercarbono, Kitaran Tabah and CEMarin, announced a cooperation agreement to develop the Blue Carbon and Blue Economy offset methodology as a new global standard.
This agreement, in the form of a Memorandum of Understanding, will strengthen the relationship between these three leaders in the Blue Carbon and Blue Economy market, focusing on the development of reliable and trusted methodologies for the fast-growing and highly innovative blue carbon offset sector.
The objective is focused on:
a. The development of methodologies for blue carbon and blue economy projects, including mangrove, salt marsh and seagrass ecosystems.
b. Research and development of best practices in carbon offsetting, technology and environmental assets, in the field of blue carbon and blue economy.
c. Capacity building and knowledge transfer between the parties, as well as with other stakeholders.
For Alex Saer, CEO of Cercarbono «Blue carbon comprises approximately 50 million hectares of mangroves, seagrasses and salt marshes with carbon burial rates that are up to 55 times faster than those of tropical rainforests. This partnership aims to ensure that blue carbon and blue economy projects are not only efficient, but also reliable and normalise scrutiny on a long-term sustainable basis.»
Norita Ja’afar, founder and partner of Kitaran Tabah, said: «Global buyers of carbon offsets are looking to mangroves and seagrasses to become valuable carbon offset assets, especially in equatorial areas. A new methodology will generate significant environmental benefits by turning forests into huge carbon-absorbing green lungs. This will generate significant long-term income for the owners, stakeholders and the community of the environmental assets.»
Andrés Fernando Osorio Arias, Director of CEMarin, said, «The blue mangrove is not only the most efficient natural carbon offset, but also the most complex. Our collaboration will ensure that blue carbon and blue economy projects and their applied methodology respect the science and its implications for the planet in a way that is worthy and expected by the global community».
