Cercarbono has updated its document: « Safeguarding Principles and Procedures of Cercarbono Certification Programme, which is essential for ensuring the protection and sustainable development of environmental projects. This document reinforces the organization’s commitment to environmental and social integrity, ensuring that projects certified under the standard adhere to the highest principles of human rights, community participation, and responsible natural resource management.

The social and environmental safeguards consist of a set of principles aimed at preventing risks and maximizing the benefits of projects. Cercarbono has developed a comprehensive approach that not only ensures protection but also promotes the well-being of local communities and the long-term sustainability of certified projects.

Key highlights of this update include:

  • Alignment with the principles of the Global Compact, which strengthens respect for human rights and sustainable development.
  • A robust due diligence process, ensuring integrity at every stage of the project lifecycle.
  • Inclusion of the Free, Prior, and Informed Consent (FPIC) process, crucial for ensuring the active participation of local communities.
  • Clear reporting, declaration, and validation requirements to ensure the continuous compliance with safeguards throughout the project’s life.
  • Detailed risk analysis, along with management plans and ongoing monitoring, ensuring proactive management of any potential impacts.

Cercarbono’s approach to safeguards also emphasizes its commitment to differentiated treatment for indigenous peoples and local communities, ensuring that their rights and perspectives are always protected and respected.

This document places Cercarbono at the forefront of carbon project development, offering not only tools to minimize risks but also to generate positive impacts on communities and ecosystems.
